Using a weighted vest can be an effective way to build bone density, especially as part of an exercise regimen that includes weight-bearing activities like walking, doing chores like gardening or even for strength workouts or for group fitness class.
Here's a step-by-step guide to get started with a Hyper VEST plus helpful FAQs about our weighted vests.
Consult with a Healthcare Provider: First and foremost before starting any new exercise regimen, especially if you have osteoporosis, arthritis, or any other condition that could be affected by increased load on your body, it's essential to talk with your doctor or a physical therapist. They can provide personalized advice and ensure it's safe for you to use a weighted vest.

- Start Slowly: Begin with a small amount of weight and a shorter duration of use. For example, you might start by wearing the vest for 15-20 minutes during a short walk around the block with 2-10 lbs of weight. Gradually increase both the duration and the weight as you build strength and endurance. The weight you begin with is up to you and is dependent on your fitness experience level so we can't tell you exactly where to start. Consult a phsyican or trainer if you are unsure. If you are new to exercise we recommend 1-2 lbs and if you are more experienced and have even done some strength training you may want to start with 5-10 lbs. The key is to go slowly and build slowly. We recommend you distribute weight as evenly as possible from front to back and working from the center and out.
-
Incorporate Various Exercises: Weighted vests are most effective when used during weight-bearing exercises. These can include:
- Walking or jogging
- Stair climbing
- Bodyweight exercises such as squats or lunges
- Strength training exercises
- Aerobic classes
- Chores or gardening
- Dance or Tai Chi
-
Monitor Your Body's Response: Pay attention to how your body responds to exercising with a weighted vest. If you experience pain or discomfort, reduce the weight or duration. Ensure the vest does not restrict your breathing or movement. Stop using it and stop exercising if you feel faint or dizzy. This is why we recommend you start slowly and with very little weight. This is a marathon and not a sprint and building bone density takes time.
-
Consistency is Key: Like any exercise regimen, consistency is crucial for effectiveness. Aim to incorporate the weighted vest into your routine several times a week and build up over time to extended wear.
-
Track Progress and Adjust: Keep a record of your workouts and the weight you're using. Over time, as your fitness level increases, adjust the amount of weight to continue challenging your body safely.
- Care & Use: The FIT, PRO and ELITE vests are washable. Remove weights and wash on the gentle cycle or hand wash in a sink. Lay flat to dry. Lay flat for storage or hang on a sturdy hanger.
