How to Choose a Sandbag for HYROX Training: Weight, Filling, and Everyday Use

Buying a sandbag for HYROX training starts with your race division—but weight is only part of the decision. Learn what to check about filling, construction, handling, and versatility before choosing your training bag.

Choosing a sandbag for HYROX sandbag lunge training starts with three questions: What weight does your division use? Does the bag arrive filled? And how will you use it between race-specific workouts? At Hyperwear we are experts in designing workout sandbags since we patented the SandBell in 2011.

Look for a bag you can position comfortably, a filling system you understand, and construction suited to your training environment. For home gyms and shared training spaces, setup and cleanup deserve as much attention as the number on the label.

What sandbag weight do you need for HYROX?

HYROX uses 10, 20, or 30 kg sandbags, depending on the division. The sandbag lunge station covers 100 meters.

The following table summarizes the standard Singles and Doubles divisions in the 2026/27 rulebooks.

Sandbag weight Approximate pounds Singles division Doubles division
10 kg 22 lb Women Open Women Open
20 kg 44 lb Men Open; Women Pro Men Open; Mixed; Women Pro
30 kg 66 lb Men Pro Men Pro

Race weight and starting training weight are different decisions

Your division’s weight gives you a target for race preparation. Your current ability determines the load you can train with under control.

If you are learning loaded lunges, build a consistent movement pattern before adding more weight or distance. A bag that is too heavy to position or carry comfortably can make it difficult to practice well.

For coaches and gyms, having several clearly labeled weights lets athletes train at different levels without repeatedly emptying and refilling one bag. SandBell filler bags can be quickly removed to train at a lower weight and progress.

Does the sandbag come filled?

Check this before comparing prices. A product described as a “20 kg sandbag” may refer to its intended filled weight. You will need to go buy sand separately. You may be instructed to under-fill rectangular bags to try to prevent leaks and bursting.

There are three common arrangements:

Filling arrangement What to check before buying
Empty shell Whether inner filler bags are included and which filling material the manufacturer permits
Shell with empty filler bags How much sand you need, how to close the inserts, and how to verify the assembled weight
System with prefilled inserts What is included, whether any assembly is required, and whether the inserts have other training uses

An empty bag can suit someone who wants to source the filling locally and handle setup themselves. A prefilled system can be more convenient when you want to begin training without buying, measuring, and handling loose sand.

Compare the delivered, ready-to-use cost: the bag, filling material, shipping, and any additional components you need.

CENTR and Hyperwear: what is included?

The official HYROX shop lists the CENTR x HYROX Competition Sandbag with empty inner filler bags and states that sand is not included. Hyperwear’s Hybrid Race™ Training Sandbag System includes prefilled SandBell® inserts.

Product details checked September 2026: CENTR listing in the official HYROX shop and Hyperwear Hybrid Race™ Training Sandbag System.

CENTR is HYROX’s official equipment provider. Hyperwear’s system is an independent training product; matching a division’s weight does not make a bag official race equipment.

What should you check about construction and handling?

Shoulder fit and bag shape

A sandbag needs to work on your body as well as on a scale.

Consider how easily you can lift it into position, whether you can hold it securely, and how its shape feels across your shoulders. Bags with the same total weight can differ in dimensions, firmness, and how the filling moves.

If possible, try the bag at the weight you expect to use. A comfortable empty shell does not tell you how the loaded bag will feel.

Handles and closures

Look at where the handles sit and how they attach to the shell. Think about the movements you plan to perform: lifting the bag from the floor, positioning it for lunges, carrying it, or holding it for squats.

Check how the outer bag closes and how the filling stays contained. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming every handled sandbag is designed for the same exercises or treatment.

Training surface and care

Choose equipment that suits the place you train.

Indoor turf, rubber flooring, concrete, and outdoor ground expose a bag to different wear. Avoid sharp objects and abrasive surfaces, and inspect the shell, handles, and closure regularly.

For a shared gym, readable weight labels and a consistent storage location also make class setup easier.

Can your sandbag do more than lunges?

Before buying, list the exercises you want the equipment to support.

A handled training bag can be useful for loaded carries, front-held squats, deadlifts, and other controlled strength movements. Its suitability depends on the bag’s design, load, and manufacturer guidance.

The Hyperwear system adds another option: remove the SandBell inserts and use them separately for movements such as rows, carries, and slams on appropriate surfaces. Use the inserts for those exercises rather than assuming the entire outer bag is a slam bag.

For a home gym, that gives each component a job. For a coach, it provides additional ways to organize a circuit or scale a session.

See our sandbag workout guide for exercise ideas and lunge-training progressions.

Which sandbag setup makes sense for you?

Your situation What to prioritize
Preparing for your first race Your division’s target weight, manageable training progression, and straightforward setup
Training at home Storage, filling containment, surface compatibility, and exercises beyond lunges
Training with a partner Each person’s division and ability; do not assume one load suits both
Coaching group classes Clearly labeled weights, quick transitions, easy inspection, and consistent equipment
Buying a gift Confirm the recipient’s race division and whether the bag arrives filled

A heavier bag is not automatically a better purchase. The useful choice is the one that supports the training you will actually do.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a regular workout sandbag for HYROX training?

A suitably designed workout sandbag can be useful for practicing loaded lunges. Check its weight, shoulder positioning, closure, and intended use. A strongman bag or another differently shaped bag may feel substantially different from the equipment used in the race.

Is a 20 lb sandbag the same as a 10 kg sandbag?

No. Ten kilograms is approximately 22 lb. Likewise, 20 kg is approximately 44 lb, and 30 kg is approximately 66 lb. If you want to practice at your division’s specified load, check the units rather than treating pounds and kilograms as interchangeable.

Can I adjust the weight by changing the filling?

That depends on the system. Follow its filling instructions and loading limits. If you change the contents, check the total assembled weight and make sure the remaining load is secure. Do not assume every shell performs properly at every fill level.

What should I check when buying an empty sandbag?

Confirm whether filler bags are included, what material is permitted, how the inserts close, and how you will weigh the completed bag. Include filling and delivery costs when comparing it with a prefilled system.

Choose a bag that earns its place in your training

Start with your race division, then consider the daily details: getting the bag ready, positioning it comfortably, keeping the filling contained, and using it throughout your program.
